About Mezentius

He was apparently a mythical Etruscan king, banished for his cruelty, who despised the gods. He was the father of Lausus and supporter of king Turnus in his war with the Trojans under Aeneas, over the daughter of King Latinus and Amata, Lavinia whom he had been promised would be his bride. But Latinus changed his mind after consulting the oracle and offered Lavinia to Aeneas, in the resulting conflict, his son Lausus was killed by Aeneas, protecting his wounded father, but Mezentius did not survive for long, and was soon slain in combat with Aeneas.
