Was one of the sisters of Meleager and the daughter of Oeneus and Althaea, her others sisters, were, Melanippe, Perimede and maybe Mothone; they mourned so much after Meleager died, that Artemis changed them into guineafowl and placed them at her shrine on Leros, where she was worshipped as the Maiden [Virgin]. I suspect that the birds were associated with Artemis, under the constellation we often commonly call the Hen and her chicks, otherwise known as the Pleiades, especially as guineafowl are monogamous and tend to live in small groups or larger flocks. But Artemis was not only a protector of virgins, but she was also closely associated with Bear cults, for a more indepth discussion see Artemis.
