He was one of the fifty sons of Aegyptus, who were ordered by their father to marry the daughters of his brother Danaus. Danaus who tried to avoid this by moving his family to Argos, where he became king. When Lynceus and his brothers arrived to collect their brides, ready to do battle if necessary, Danaus gave way and allowed the marriages to go ahead, but told his daughters to kill their husbands on the night of the wedding to safeguard their maidenhood. Forty-nine did as commanded, but Hypermnestra having explained to her new husband Lynceus that she wished to remain a virgin, respected her wishes. When Danaus found out he angrily hauled her before the court, but Aphrodite, took up her case and won her freedom. Hypermnestra returned to Lynceus and they started a family. Later Lynceus slew Danaus for causing the deaths of his brothers, and replaced him as king.
