He was the son of Porthaon and Euryte, and married Althaea daughter of Thestius? By whom he fathered, Toxeus, Clymenus, Periphas, Agelaus, Thyreus, Gorge, Mothone, Perimede, Melanippe, and Meleager, (although Ares is also thought to the father) and Deianeira (although it is suggested that Dionysus fathered her via Althaea), and he was also the father of Tydeus by Periboea, the daughter of Hipponous via Astynome. He was a mythical king of Calydon in Aetolia, who introduced the art of wine making to the region, which he learned from the equally mythical figure of Dionysus.
