The ancient Greek Gods and Goddess contain a wealth of stories and legends, wrapped in Myths which typically provide a story with a morale code designed to influence the reader into behaviour as fitting Greek culture of the era.

He was recorded as the son of Ares and Theogone [child of the gods], and married Omphale (navel); he and his wife were appointed to judge a music competition between, Marsyas, or Pan and Apollo, see in book on Lelops for both versions of the story. One day when Tmolus was out hunting on mount Carmanorium, he spotted one of Artemis's priestesses, a huntress called Arrhippe and he was instantly filled with great love for her. But she ignored him, deaf to seductive words or threats and retreated to the temple. Tmolus entered the sacred temple and foolishly blinded by lust he raped her on the very couch of Artemis. When he had finished Arrhippe evoked the goddess to revenge her and hanged herself. Artemis enraged at what he had done let loose a mad bull, which tossed him into the air and he landed in an area of sharp sticks and stones and died in agony. Later his son buried him where he fell and renamed the mountain and city on its slopes Tmolus, after him.
