The ancient Greek Gods and Goddess contain a wealth of stories and legends, wrapped in Myths which typically provide a story with a morale code designed to influence the reader into behaviour as fitting Greek culture of the era.
In this article, we look at Zagreus and the myths and legends surrounding Zagreus, Zagreus relationship to and with other Greek Gods and Goddess and key events and stories which relate to ancient astrology and the changing seasons.
The story of Zagreus is very confused, it would seem to me that logically he equates to the Egyptian god Seth, being first spoken of in connection with Gaia (Mother Earth) as being the highest of the then gods. Now Seth was the first king and god of Earth, his kingdom like that of the Greek Hades encompassed all things within the earth and below the surface of the sea. Indeed, it would not be far wrong to say, the Geek, Hades Zagreus and Persephone, were the same as the Egyptian, Seth and Nephthys. Zagreus was often linked to the eating of raw flesh, but that is hardly surprizing as in the depths of time before mankind mastered fire, all things must have been eaten raw, in fact a lot of fish are still eaten raw by people, and wild animals and birds and so on have little choice but to eat raw flesh. In later history Zagreus became embroiled with Dionysus, mainly due to the horrific practices of his priestesses the Bacchants or Maenads, who in certain ceremonies, tore the sacrificial victims flesh from his or her body and devoured it raw. See under Dionysus.
