Introduction to Abderus

The ancient Greek Gods and Goddess contain a wealth of stories and legends, wrapped in Myths which typically provide a story with a morale code designed to influence the reader into behaviour as fitting Greek culture of the era.

In this article, we look at Abderus and the myths and legends surrounding Abderus, Abderus relationship to and with other Greek Gods and Goddess and key events and stories which relate to ancient astrology and the changing seasons.

About Abderus

Reports vary, he may have been the son of Poseidon, by a river Naiad called Thronia, or a son of Hermes and one of Herakles lovers? An Abderus was with Herakles during his labour to catch the man-eating mares of Diomedes; Herakles caught the mares, by overpowering their grooms and then driving them into the sea, and left Abderus to ensure they remained there, while he fought off the Bistones, the Thracian subjects of king Diomedes, unfortunately the mares had not been fed and attacked and ate him. Another source names Abderus as a son of Menoetius, the father of Patroclus [glory of his father] although he has no story to his name. yet another, lists him, as a son of the Locrian Thromius, but no connection to any myth occurs. The name Abderus may be linked to the city of Abdera, of Thrace, I suspect that it was a name linked to the sacred king of the year, who was torn apart by priestesses wearing horse masks, see Bellerophon, for more insight.
