About Demophon

(some authors render it Demophoon, by mistake, as there is a separate character by that name, Robert Graves does this where he relates the same story in two different places, one under Demophon, the other under Demophoon, even though the stories are exactly the same.) He was one of the sons of king Celeus of Eleusis, and Metanira. While Demeter was searching for her daughter Persephone, she came to his palace in the guise of an old lady. Celeus treated her kindly and appointed her as wet nurse to his youngest son Demophon, and nanny to Triptolemus, some sources name a daughter as well. Later wishing to reward Celeus for his hospitality she decided to make Demophon immortal, but she was unable to complete the transformation as his mother Metanira walked in on her as she held the child in the fire. This made her angry, but still determined to reward Celeus, she taught Triptolemus all the arts of agriculture. Unfortunately, Demophon was to find himself never free from doom or death.
