About Limos

She was the personification of Starvation, and hunger, she distressing to look at, or encounter. Ovid reports that she lived at the fathest end of Scythia, in a freezing, wasteland where nothing grew, although she was never far from her sister Famine, called Fames, by the Romans. She aids Demeter, when the mythical snake king Ersichthon of Thessaly cuts down Demeters sacred grove, killing one of her tree nymphs. As punishment Limos visits him while he sleeps and breaths into his mouth, filling his body with insatiable hunger. When he wakes he devours all he can find, but the more he eats, the more hungry he becomes, pretty soon he has sold all he ever owned to by food, but he was never satisfied, and the only thing he had left was his daughter called Mestra, so he sold her into slavery, but Poseidon who had been her lover visted her and gave her the ability to change her form at will, by which means she escaped and returned to her father, only for him to sell her again, this action was repeated several times, but then, either she did not return quick enough, or the continual hunger had unhinged his mind and he devoured himself.
