About Melas

Was the mythical son of Poseidon and a nymph from the island of Chios, I suspect that his mother was a tree nymph as historically the island was always famous source of mastic gum, from its pine trees, it was originally known by two names, one signifying Snake Island, the other Pine trees. There is no historical indication that it was, infested with snakes, but we can never forget that serpents and snakes, were one and the same, and that Poseidon was half man and half sea serpent, thus they invented the myth of Poseidon in his serpent form, as mating with a tree nymph of the pine tree and producing Melas, black mastic, historians and authors in general have ignored the importance of this mastic which was used in waterproofing ships, or sealing leaks, during the Ionians revolt against the Persians in 499BC, the Chains, (those of Chois) had atleast a hundred ships in their fleet, far outnumbering, their allies or foes, and fought on after all their allies, were defeated or surrendered, but were forced to retreat, for lack of support, and came under Persian rule.
