The ancient Greek Gods and Goddess contain a wealth of stories and legends, wrapped in Myths which typically provide a story with a morale code designed to influence the reader into behaviour as fitting Greek culture of the era.
In this article, we look at Nereids and the myths and legends surrounding Nereids, Nereids relationship to and with other Greek Gods and Goddess and key events and stories which relate to ancient astrology and the changing seasons.
Nereids were sea nymphs, daughters of Nereus the ancient sea and water god and his own daughter, Doris, who was one of the fifty Nereids. Others included, Amphitrite who married Poseidon (her own father, who was previously known as Nereus), and Thetis, wife of Peleus and mother of Achilles; Opis, who is instructed by Diana to kill the Etruscan Arruns for killing her virgin warrior servant Camilla, Psamathe wife of Proteus of Egypt. They had one brother called Nerites. The Nereids were said to live in a golden palace beneath the sea with the father Nereus, whom they danced around and sang to in harmonious tones. Later when Nereus was renamed Poseidon, they formed part of his entourage and carried his trident for him. (We should not be confused, by the fact, that Amphitrite, was seen as both a Nereid and one of the Oceanid, for they are the same thing, see Oceanids.) [considering the Nereids danced around their father, who would be renamed Neptune, it seems only fitting that one of the planet Neptune' moons should be called, Nereid.]
