About Acarnan

Was the elder son of the river nymph Callirrhoe, by Alcmaeon, when Alcmaeon was murdered by the sons of king Phegeus, for deceiving him and his daughter Arsinoe [male minded] who Alcmaeon had been married to, Callirrhoe prayed to Zeus that her sons might grow instantly, so they could take revenge on their father's killers. This prayer was granted and the boys grew rapidly into men, and Callirrhoe sent them to take vengeance on Phegus's sons. Arsinoe who had witnessed her late husbands murder but knew nothing of his deception, and who had refused point blank to listen to her father's explanation had cursed her brothers and father to die a violent death before the next new moon, when her brothers returned from the deed, Phegus commanded his sons to take the cloak and necklace that belonged to the goddess Harmonia, that Alcmaeon had given to Arsinoe on their wedding day, and had been the cause of the recent argument to the Oracle at Delphi and dedicate it to Apollo, before it could cause more problems. In the meanwhile, Phegus locked Arsinoe in a chest and sent her to become a slave of the king of Nemea. On their way back from Delphi, the brothers stopped at Nemea, hoping to what had happened and get her to remove her curse, but she would not listen, then Acarnan and his brother arrived killed them then quickly moved off to Psophis, and entered king Phegus's palace and slew him and all this happened before the new full moon. The deed done the sons of Callirrhoe sort purification for their their crimes, but neither river god or king in Greece would agree to do it, so they left, travelled as far as Epirus where they settled and founded Arcania.
