Introduction to Itonus

About Itonus

He was the son of Amphictyon king of Thermopylae, and either Atthis the daughter of Cranaus, although some sources say she died young before the marriage could be consummated, or an unnamed mother, or like his father he was earth born, which said of several individuals. It implies that the concerned person has neither mother or father, and merely appeared out of the earth, but in that case, his mother could have been any one of the names given to Mother Earth. Itonus married a nymph called Melanippe, and had two daughters, Chromia and Iodame, and a son called Boeotia. It is reported that he founded a sanctuary dedicated to Athena and that Iodame served as one of the priestess' there.
