About Lachesis

One of the White Fates, disposer of lots, or distributor of fate, (see Clotho, for, insight into the issue of parenthood.) Clotho span the thread of life, Lachesis measured it with a rod, and was said to choose a person's destiny. There is something confusing in Plato's Republic, book 1, where he implies she hands souls lots, before letting them choose what form they should take in the next life, human, or animal, but the fact that she hands them lots, implies that the decision is already made, or at least down to chance, not choice.
