About Phanes

Phanes is depicted as having many of the base qualities of Aion, and is no doubt a much later version of him, endowed with extra mysterious attributes, attributed to him by the mystery cults. Like Aion, he is associated with cyclic time and the zodiac, the serpent, the sign of generation and regeneration, wraps itself around his body. His name signifies, bringer of light, or to shine. I have no doubt that he was used in mystery religions as an icon who brought the light of understanding to the initiates, and led them to the secrets of eternal life, through regeneration.
