Variations in rendered French

Authors works consulted for variations in French: (a) John Hogue. (b) Henry C. Roberts. (c) Mario Reading. (page, 806.) (d) Edgar Leoni. (e) Jean-Charles de Fontbrune (page, 313.) French rendered the same except. (b)(d) Barbare, (a)(c)(e) have, conflict, (a)(b)(c)(e) have, cornere, not cornette, and (a)(c) have, d'Almatie?

Meanings of the French words deemed appropriate. Cornere, is meaningless, Cornette= headgear, the cornet of a French hood, also, the tuft, or tipping of a hawk's hood, also, the cornet of horse, or ensign of a horse company. Ranes= frogs. Lusitanie are the Portuguese. Mettra, to put, set, lay; place, pitch, plant, situate, ground; thrust into; also, to bring, reduce, or send. Promontoire= a hill which, elbow like lies out to sea. Further insights.

Dalmatia, is basically the ligurian coast, and Ranes, which I render France, is Merovingian France of the Franks, it included Provence, and thus Marseille. A promontory is a hill, which (Edgar Leonibow like), lies out in the sea. This may well be the area from Marseille, Toulon to Frejus, And Toulon itself is best fitted to the case. Or it may mean that the Ismaelites are setting up a base, from which to launch an all-out attack on France.

Thus, we might translate

Conflict by the Barbarian in the black cornette,
Bloodshed, Dalmatia trembling,
The great Ishmael to set up his promontory,
France trembles, helped by the Portuguese.
