The 2nd temple was destroyed by Arson in 356 BC, the year of Alexandra the Great's birth: Plutarch remarked that Artemis was too preoccupied with delivery of Alexander to save her burning temple. But the people refused his offer saying it was not right for one god to pay for the building of another gods temple. [Plutarch's the life of Alexander.]
